Septic Tank Emptying
Regular emptying, sometimes called septic tank cleaning or pumping out, keeps a septic system working and protects the drainage field. The general binding rules say sludge must be emptied at least once a year, or as the manufacturer recommends, by a registered waste carrier.

How it works
What happens when a septic tank is emptied and cleaned
A vacuum tanker parks as close to the tank as access allows and a hose is run to the access cover. The sludge that has settled at the bottom and the crust of scum on top are pumped out, and the level of build-up is checked so the next visit can be planned. The waste is taken away by a registered waste carrier to a licensed facility for treatment.
While the lid is off, it's a good chance to spot problems early: cracked baffles, blocked inlets or outlets, or signs that the drainage field isn't taking water away. Anything worth acting on is flagged for you.
How often
How often should it be emptied?
At least once a year, or in line with the manufacturer's instructions, before the tank reaches capacity. Busy households, small tanks and holiday lets with high occupancy may need it more often. Cesspools hold everything, so they need emptying far more frequently.
Access
Getting the tanker to the tank
Tell us how far the tank is from where a tanker can park, whether there are gates, slopes or soft ground on the way, and whether the covers are easy to lift. Overgrown or buried covers make every visit slower, so it's worth keeping them clear and visible.

Who can empty a septic tank?
