Be careful what goes down the drains
- Only toilet paper down the toilet: no wipes, sanitary products or nappies
- No fats, oils or grease down the sink
- Go easy on bleach and strong chemicals, which can upset the bacteria in the tank
- Spread out heavy water use such as laundry
Protect the drainage field
Don't drive or park on the drainage field, don't build over it, and keep trees and large shrubs away so roots don't block the pipes. Keep roof and surface water away from it too: rainwater should go to its own soakaway.
Empty and service on time
The general binding rules say the sludge must be emptied at least once a year, or as the manufacturer recommends, by a registered waste carrier. Treatment plants also need regular servicing.
Keep the covers accessible
Make sure the access covers are visible, safe and reachable for the emptying tanker. Overgrown or buried covers make every visit slower.
Keep records
Keep emptying receipts, servicing records and any manuals. If you sell, you'll need to give the buyer written details of the system and its maintenance.
